An Open Letter to Kim Yu Na

I was not prepared to witness what you showed to the world in Vancouver; I was simply unprepared to fathom the possibility of performance beyond anything I could have wished for, let alone imagined. Approaching some six months since your revelation to the world I feel compelled to express the imprint of your vision as expressed on Olympic ice those two days last February.

What Brian Orser and David Wilson accomplished through you was magical and transforming. Their recognition, early on, of your potential for greatness gave them both insight and direction for the path they would lead you down on your journey to greatness.

But to be fair, it was you, Miss Kim who made it happen. You put your faith in them, and learned to believe in yourself and your abilities. You steeled yourself to face all the frustrations and falls you had to experience which all champions must endure and overcome.

What you displayed to the world in Vancouver touched my soul. My senses were shocked, and I experienced a level of emotions previously reserved for only one figure skater of my previous witness, Michelle Kwan. My nerve endings tingled, my skin shivered and my soul rejoiced in your display of skill and joy for what you were doing. It was hard to see you clearly through the tears that washed my eyes as you flew across my TV screen in gorgeous High Definition. My mind kept questioning what my vision was imprinting on it with the thought, "Is this a dream?"

The programs chosen for you were the perfect vehicles with which to demonstrate your abilities to the fullest. Your short program James Bond medley brought out your playfulness, as you toyed with the audience; teased us with desire and yet that hint of danger only a bond girl could emote. David Wilson's choreography deftly transformed your shyness into the aura of every man's dreams - a vision of beauty, power and danger all rolled into one. For you to have skated it as you did, with flowing grace, awesome speed, and powerfully executed jumps, it simply completed the story of a James Bond girl as David envisoned it.

Likewise the choice of George Gershwin's Concerto in F was the perfect music for your free skate. So melodic, free flowing and full of highs and lows, this selection allowed you total freedom to dance, to fly, to soar above all our expectations and I suspect yours as well. It was magical beyond words for me. All the elements of great skating were present as you floated from one to another, your edges so secure, your jumps and spins delivered with power and conviction. This program is your masterpiece!

Nearly half a year later as I put my thoughts to pen for you, the revelation that your performances on Olympic ice are of a lasting legacy brings this realization: Every time I watch them, I see something I didn't see before; I feel an emotion not felt before; and I am compelled to watch them yet again and again.

To that end, they are my last thing to experience at the end of each long day. I lay my head upon the pillow with the vision of your performances in my head. Thankyou from my heart for these treasures!

우리에게 시각적 계시로 보여주긴 했지만요.

브라이언 오서와 데이비드 윌슨이

이전에 있던 모든 것을 바꿔버리는 마법과 같은 일이었습니다.

나는 내 눈앞에 펼쳐지는 당신의 연기를 보면서

“내가 지금 꿈을 꾸는것인가?”
